Important Information for MGMT 653 Students

Program Objectives

The design of MGMT 653 (FAP) is truly integrative and stresses a team approach, involving all participants: sponsoring organizations, students and faculty. The purpose of this collaboration is to:

  • Share resources between Wharton and sponsoring organizations. Students contribute their diverse backgrounds, work experiences and interests, guided by experienced Wharton faculty. Host organizations contribute their firm and industry-specific knowledge and the unique problems and challenges that they present to the student teams.
  • Deliver managerially relevant analysis. The requirement of relevance forces student teams to apply their classroom knowledge to the practical concerns of the organizations. At the same time, it offers insights to the managers of the host organization into the problems and challenges they are facing.
  • Expose managers to new analysis and problem solving practices.
  • Increase students’ competencies as leaders in a team environment.
  • Create an exciting dialogue between students, who are unhindered by historical precedent, and managers, who understand practical realities.

Host Organization Responsibilities

We believe both host organizations and participating students will realize value from the program. To ensure that projects yield significant benefits for all participants, we ask that host organizations comply with the following:

  • Appoint an on-site contact person to help define project objectives, interact with faculty and team members, and facilitate access to the organization’s information and resources. Each team will appoint one student as the “team contact” with whom the host organization can communicate.
  • Ensure strong commitment and cooperation from all involved in the project.
  • Commit to participate in a project “Kick-Off” in September 2016 (Fall semester)/January 2017 (Spring semester) on campus, a Mid-Project Review in mid-October/mid-February, and a discussion of the team’s analysis on campus, at the conclusion of the project in December 2016/April 2017 (Spring semester).
  • A tax-deductible contribution of $10,000 as an honorarium to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund (payable to “Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania”), as well as payment of reasonably incurred expenses such as phone calls, copies of Final Presentation, as well as research materials and travel when necessary.
